What is rice cake made of?
Tteokguk tteok are thinly sliced rice cakes used to make tteokguk, a traditional Korean soup typically enjoyed during the Lunar New Year. These rice cakes are made from glutinous rice flour, giving them a chewy texture. They are cylindrical and sliced into oval shapes before being added to the soup. The rice cakes become soft and slightly chewy when cooked, absorbing the flavours of the broth. Tteokguk is often garnished with egg strips, seaweed, and green onions, and it symbolises good luck and the gaining of another year in age.
